The Original Club was formed in 1990 at Berristowe Lane, Huthwaite. This was a temporary site, due to the proximity of power cables and the high rent. After 18 months here, the founder members ( John Hoggard , Frank Taylor and Steve Hickling ) had negotiated a better site just outside Pinxton, they rallied round to get 11 members to share the field costs. This was to be the club's new home, where we grew, formed good friends and started to put the BMFA guidelines for safety into practise. We gained and trained very good pilots in both Aeroplanes and Helicopters and even commenced display flying in aid of charity. In 1996 we decided to move again when we discovered that an intended residential development plan included our flying field. Today We now fly from Lea moor, near to Tansley ( see map ) in Derbyshire. We are blessed with wonderful scenery, a field with ample parking, easy access and a grass strip 120 metres x 40 metres. We have a good number of Instructors and Examiners, and take safety and harmony very seriously. Our Flying Site A quote from John 'Hoggy' Hoggard , one of our founder members sums it all up -
" In my opinion, the club that we now have is the best in the midlands and I am so proud to be a member of Leafields Model Aircraft Club " Members We currently have around 30 or so very friendly members, we enjoy barbeques during our flying (weather permitting) and learners are encouraged to take advantage of our designated club instructors to attain a safe flying standard as quickly and safely as possible. The models we fly generally fall into the categories of R/C Planes or R/C Helicopters. The wind is usually down the weekly mown ( or should that be weakly ?? ) grass strip, making take offs and landings quite leisurely. However, occasionally flying is ‘interesting’ when the wind is from the North West, directly over a nearby copse, sometimes causing turbulence, and crosswind take-offs and landings. Amongst our members we have : - 1 Area Chief Examiner (Fixed Wing)
- 3 Club Examiners (Fixed Wing)
- 1 Club Examiner (Helicopters)
- 6 Club flying instructors (Fixed Wing)
- 1 MFA registered instructor (Fixed Wing)
- 2 Club flying instructors (Helicopters)
As ever, the evening time is best, especially following a nice sunny day ( if you’re old enough to remember them ) when the calm and tranquillity of the rural English countryside brings out impromptu ‘spot landing’, 'synchronised flying’ and ‘lowest inverted pass’ competitions!
